216 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION C urrently a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Richard David Krugman has played an instrumental role in the lives of abused children. He became intrigued with the field because of Dr. C. Henry Kempe, founder of The Kempe Center, who gave a talk on battered child syndrome at NYU, where Dr. Krugman studied medicine. Fascinated by Kempe’s speech, Dr. Krugman applied to the University of Colorado, subsequently beginning a residency in pediatrics in 1968. The Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect, founded in 1972, was established to evaluate, diagnose and provide treatment and therapy for abused and neglected children and their families. Since 1973 Dr. Krugman has aided children while also serving as an assistant professor, associate professor, distinguished professor, dean and vice chancellor of health affairs. A member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society and the Institute of Medicine, Dr. Krugman has over 100 articles and has edited several books. Additionally, he served as editor- in-chief of the journal Child Abuse & Neglect for 15 years. Preparing for changes in the future, he is starting The Kempe National Fund—a new national fund raising effort for child maltreatment research and prevention that does not currently exist in the United States but will be similar to the March of Dimes. Board certified in pediatrics since 1973, Dr. Krugman earned a Bachelor of Arts at Princeton University and a Doctor of Medicine from New York University. His dedication and passion to enrich the lives of abused children earned him the C. Henry Kempe Award at the National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect and the Ray Helfer Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Krugman defines success as being respected by one’s colleagues while somehow maintaining a family.
