218 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Paul Kuy-Seang Ky is a survivor of a Cambodian child labor camp who never let his misfortune hinder his progress. During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, he was separated from his parents for three years and five months before his father found both him and his brother in labor camps. After migrating to the United States in 1979, he was illiterate and faced many challenges associated with living in a foreign country. As he grew older, however, he improved his English and learned five other languages. From there Dr. Ky was able to take on more science courses and eventually began leaning toward the medical field because his younger brother got into dentistry. He completed undergraduate coursework in business at California State University and coursework in acupuncture medicine at Xiamen University before earning a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Ky was a family medicine intern at Downey Regional Medical Center and the Western University of Health Sciences. He continued honing his expertise as a resident in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University in 2008 before completing a fellowship at the institution a year later. In 2009 he became the owner of and an interventional spine specialist for Advanced Pain Solutions, where he is responsible for treating diseases, injuries and deformities by utilizing minimally invasive or the least invasive surgical methods involving instruments, appliances or manual manipulation. Dr. Ky is the co-author of “Independent Medical Examinations: Facts and Fallacies,” “Validation of ICD-9 Code 787.2 for Identification of Individuals with Dysphagia from Administrative Databases,” and “Supratentorial Regions of Acute Ischemia Associated With Clinically Important Swallowing Disorders: A Pilot Study.” He is affiliated with the Spine Intervention Society, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Ky attributes his success to his sister, who was able to obtain two master’s degrees, and his mother, who provided for her family and helped them to survive and flourish.
