102 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING D escribed by his peers as a radical being who has always challenged the boundaries of his own resilience, Dr. Kirk Christian Valanis was inspired by his father’s daring nature and willingness to take risks in order to achieve success. He has been curious about nature since a young age and discovered that finding the answers to life’s greatest questions is a never-ending process. With the goal of understanding motives behind certain aspects of human nature, he desires to leave behind a profound legacy. Dr. Valanis has been the owner of Endochronics Inc. since 1996 and a research professor at the University of Portland since 1998. Formerly employed by Iowa State University as a professor, the University of Iowa as a professor and department head, and the University of Cincinnati as a professor and dean of engineering, he has over 50 years of experience in his profession. Dr. Valanis holds a BS and MS from the Imperial College London and a PhD from Purdue University. He cites receiving his doctorate degree as a career highlight. In addition to maintaining fellowship with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he has been a research grantee of several laboratories and foundations during his career, such as the Waterways Experiment Station, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory and the National Science Foundation. To share his breadth of knowledge with his community, he authored and edited “Constitutive Equations” in 1976 and authored “Irreversible Thermodynamics” in 1977, as well as contributed several articles to esteemed journals. A former affiliate of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory within the California Institute of Technology and affiliated with NASA for 26 years, Dr. Valanis was also a consultant for S-Cubed and Maxwell Technologies Inc. from 1976 to 1992 and an affiliate of the University of Crete in Greece from 1978 to 1986. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue conducting research in physics and publish a novella he just finished writing. He has been listed in numerous Who’s Who publications since 2000.
