135 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS F rom a young age, Dr. Anthony D. Whittemore has sought to dedicate himself to the medical profession to help others who are struggling with disease. Attending Trinity College in his youth, he received a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1966 before earning an MD from Columbia University in 1970. From there, he completed a residency in surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center between 1970 and 1976 and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1976 to 1977. His first professional role was chief of vascular surgery at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1977, a role he held for two years. From there, he began his tenure at Harvard Medical School, where he first served as an instructor of surgery in 1979 before ascending the ranks to assistant professor in 1981, associate professor in 1987, and full professor in 1993. Alongside his academic appointments, Dr. Whittemore has been the chief medical officer of Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 1999, as well as a consultant to Meadox Medical School, Bard Cardiopulmonary and Cardiosurgery, and Instrumentation Laboratories. He has also sat on the program committee of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs since 1982, having also been a past president of the American Surgical Association, the New England Society for Vascular Surgery, the International Cardiovascular Society and the Boston Surgical Society. A noted fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Whittemore has contributed more than 300 articles to professional journals throughout his tenure. He holds several patents in the field and is a former lieutenant commander of the U.S. Navy, who decorated him with a Commendation Award. To remain abreast of industry developments, he maintains affiliation with the New England Surgical Society, the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society of University Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgery. As a testament to his success, he was highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World. ANTHONY D.
