350 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D aniel W. Duncan’s parents instilled within him and his siblings from a young age that they should use their advantages to help others. Receiving his first union card in 1973, he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1978. He began his career as a reporter in Manchester, Tennessee, in 1978 and subsequently at papers in Tennessee and Florida early in his career. In 1987, he began serving the Seafarers International Union in Jacksonville, Florida, as a field-political representative. He was transferred to the union’s Maryland headquarters in 1989 to work as an associate editor, assistant editor, managing editor and communications director until 2000. From there, he began his tenure at the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO, where he has been serving as the executive director since 2000, then elected executive secretary-treasurer in 2011. A former sergeant-at-arms for the North Florida Community Services Union Counselor Association in 1989, Mr. Duncanmaintains affiliation with several related organizations. He has been a Lions Club member since 1980, and he has been an executive committee member of the Community Services Agency of Washington since 2002. He has been active in the Northern Virginia Labor Federation since 1992, serving as president from 2007 to 2016. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Duncan received several accolades and honors. Most recently, he earned the John Sturdivant Award from the 11th Congressional District of Democrats in 2013, having previously received the Herbert Block Award from the Washington-Baltimore News Guild in 2008. Earlier in his career, he was named Young Democrat of the Year by the Broward County Young Democrats in 1984. However, he cites a career highlight to be when he was asked by individuals in the Northern Virginia Labor Federation to create themost effective “Get Out to Vote” organization in the state.
