245 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S upported by 60 years of practiced excellence in nursing and education, Carolyn A. Miller has been serving as a clinical staff member and certified nurse midwife at Maternal Health Center in Bettendorf, Iowa, since 1990. Previously affiliated with the Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing in Liberia, she served the hospital as founder, instructor, supervisor of midwifery education, supervisor of the midwifery clinic and Department of Obstetrics, and faculty member in the nurse midwifery educational program for many decades between 1966 and 1990. During this time, Ms. Miller was a coordinator of midwifery education and instructor at the Frontier Nursing Service in Hyden, Kentucky, from 1977 to 1979. Likewise, she formerly served Cuttington University College in Liberia as an instructor, supervisor of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, and chair of the Division of Nursing between 1966 and 1976. At the inception of her career in 1959, she was a staff nurse in Iowa City, Iowa, and an instructor and supervisor of practical nursing at the University of Iowa. Ms. Miller holds a diploma from the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa. She is a state certified midwife through the Elsie Inglis Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a certified nurse midwife through Booth Maternity Hospital in Philadelphia. A registered nurse in the state of Iowa, she maintains affiliation with the American College of Nurse Midwifery and Sigma Theta Tau. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to nursing and education, Ms. Miller has received numerous accolades from the President of Liberia and Cuttington University College. She was also named a Distinguished Alumnus by the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses in 1990. However, she cites her time spent in Liberia to be the absolute highlight of her career. Through her work in Liberia, she was able to make a genuine change in others’ lives and encounter individuals from all walks of life. CAROLYN A.
