358 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine the designer of the first commercial relational database management system for a mainframe computer in 1975, and he holds five U.S. patents in database management. Dr. Friesen has maintained affiliation with the International Council on Systems Engineering since 2018, having also been a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. Equally passionate about Chinese language and history, he authored “China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s and 1940s.” He is a member of the Association for Asian Studies and the American Historical Association. In light of his success, Dr. Friesen received the H.W. Sweatt Award from Honeywell in 1978. He has also been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World. Dr. Friesen holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from the University of Arizona, as well as a PhD from Arizona State University. D uring his undergraduate studies in the 1960s, Dr. Oris D. Friesen specialized in mathematics. During this time, computer science was inexistent and as the decades passed, Dr. Friesen utilized his background in mathematics to experiment with computer programming, database management and eventually software engineering. After obtaining a master’s degree in 1966, he served as a computer system analyst for Computer Sciences Corporation for two years before becoming a computer system designer for General Electric until 1970. Affiliated with Honeywell Information Systems for the following 20 years, he was a database system designer and engineering fellow of database management, having also held the latter role at Bull Worldwide Information Systems until 1999. In his later years, Dr. Friesen served as a research professor of computer science and engineering at Arizona State University from 1999 to 2001.
