232 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine been a former president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health grants. Supported by a Bachelor of Arts from Drury University and MD from the Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Hammon has sat on a number of editorial boards for prominent medical journals. Affiliated with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for many years, he is also a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. As a testament to his success and longevity in the field, Dr. Hammon has garnered multiple accolades. In 1985, he received the President’s Award for Best Scientific Paper from the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and was also honored with two Distinguished Alumni Awards from Drury University in 1989 and 2001. Most recently, he was presented with a 50-Year Lifetime Achievement Award fromTulane University School of Medicine and was listed in the 71st edition of Who’s Who in America in 2018. D rawing upon 42 years of practiced experience in cardiothoracic surgery and education, Dr. John W. Hammon Jr. is a venerated figure in his industry. Commencing his career in 1977 after completing an internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center, he served the center as a teaching scholar in cardiac surgery for one year before transferring to Vanderbilt University, where he became an assistant professor of surgery until 1983. He then ascended the ranks to associate professor and full professor of surgery until 1991 while also acting as chief of cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Nashville VA Hospital in Tennessee for four years. Soon thereafter, Dr. Hammon served as a Howard Holt Bradshaw professor and chairman of the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, from 1991 to 1995. A past professor of surgery at the Wake Forest School of Medicine until 2009, he has since earned the title of professor emeritus. Even after retirement, Dr. Hammon continues to serve on the cardiac devices panel of the Federal Drug Administration, having JOHN W.
