190 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G eology has fascinated Dr. Roger Austin Newell from a formative age. Inspired by a textbook lent to him by a neighbor, he knew he wanted to pursue geology since he was in high school. Attending the University of Oregon, he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1965 before receiving a Master of Science from the Colorado School of Mines in 1971. Four years later, he obtained a PhD from Stanford University. At the inception of his career in 1974, Dr. Newell served as a geologist and researcher at Kennecott Exploration Ltd. in Salt Lake City for three years before moving on to become an exploration geologist at Newmont Exploration Ltd. in Tucson, Arizona, for the following six years. Soon promoted to exploration manager at the facility in Danbury, Connecticut – a position he held for five years – he went on to fulfill the same role at Gold Fields Mining Co. in Reno, Nevada, until 1992. From there, he was promoted to regional manager until 1995 before joining Western Exploration, Inc., from 1995 to 2000. As such, he subsequently served Capital Gold, Inc., as vice president of development until 2009 and president and chief executive officer of the Lake Victoria Mining Co. until 2015. During this time, he simultaneously acted as the director of Midway Gold, Inc., between 2012 and 2016. Since 2016, he has been a consulting geologist. Among the highlights of his career, Dr. Newell recalls his tenure with Newmont Exploration to be significant. During his time spent with the company, he consulted on a gold project in southeastern Arizona called “Mexican Hat.” In addition, he is renowned for being the president of a Mexican subsidiary, of Capital Gold Corp. of New York, which found and developed a gold mine in Sonora, Mexico, named “El Chanate.” A 50-year member of the Society of Mining Engineers, Dr. Newell is a fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists, where he is a former foundation president, and the Geological Society of America.
