Notably, he has contributed 270 articles to several professional publications during his tenure. Dr. Thigpen is a past president of the Southern Association of Oncology and international president and international vice president of Optimist International. He served as chair of the protocol committee, the major scientific committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, from 1976 to 2010, and group vice chair for science of the Gynecologic Oncology Group from 1988 to 2014. In light of his outstanding contributions to medicine, he received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Society of Gynecologic Oncology in 2017 and was named a fellow of the American College of Physicians. In his spare time, he enjoys photography, golf and table tennis. A specialist in medical oncology with a major interest in gynecologic oncology, Dr. James Tate Thigpen has amassed more than 45 years of experience in the field. Since 2014, he has served as the division director of NRG Oncology, having previously been the deputy chair from 2013 to 2018. Earlier in his career, he served the National Cancer Institute with the National Institutes of Health as chairman and member of the cancer clinical investigations review committee, as well as the American Cancer Society as a member of the national public issues committee. Alongside his primary medical responsibilities, Dr. Thigpen has flourished in the academic sphere, having first served the University of Mississippi as an assistant professor from 1973 to 1980. Promoted to associate professor soon thereafter, he also served as a full professor from 1985 until attaining emeritus status in 2016. During this time, he was also the director of the Division of Medical Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine. Certified in oncology and hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Thigpen holds a Bachelor of Science and MD from the University of Mississippi.
