256 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS W ith encouragement from her mother, Naomi Kate Sheppard chose to enter the field of nursing. In 1955, she received a diploma from the Scott & White School of Nursing and an AA from Temple College. Ms. Sheppard later received a BA in sociology and biology from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1966 and an MSN from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973. Certified in psychiatric nursing by the American Nurses Association, Ms. Sheppard commenced her career as a staff nurse at the Scott and White Memorial Hospital from 1955 to 1963 before becoming head nurse, a role she held until 1964. Continuing her time at Scott and White, she then spent five years as an in-service education coordinator. Delving thereafter into academia, Ms. Sheppard was an associate professor at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor from 1972 until her retirement in 1992. Ms. Sheppard creditsmuch of her success to her mentors Dr. Laverne Goldman and Anna Lowe Cole. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE). NURSING EDUCATOR (RETIRED) University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Temple, TX NAOMI KATE SHEPPARD M ark C. Pica received a BS in psychology, with a minor in biology, from Wayne State University. From 1989 to 2017, he worked at William Beaumont Hospital as a phlebotomist, dynamic technician, cardiovascular technician and researcher. Additionally, he has been the president and chief executive officer of the Precision Core Angiographic Core Lab since 1987. He was the first individual in the country to use and assist with the Infraredx LipiScan (NIRS IVUS) catheter imaging system to characterize human atherosclerosis using infrared chemography. Mr. Pica was among the first to describe multiple unstable coronary arteries in patients with acute MI. He also was among the first involved with the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Additionally, he was among the first individuals to assist with coronary angiography with minimally invasive heart bypass surgery in the operating room. He also assisted with angiography to identify fractured mechanical heart valves. He is a member of the Society of Clinical Research Associates. In 1978, he joined the U.S. Army, spending 12 years as an enlisted soldier then went to Officer Candidate School and became a second Lieutenant.
