131 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W allace J. Tomasini has had a longstanding interest in art stemming from his childhood, which led him into a career in art history. He received a BA in 1949, and an MA and PhD in 1953 from the University of Michigan. He also completed postdoctoral coursework at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Specializing in Italianmedieval studies and the Renaissance, Dr. Tomasini was a faculty member at the University of Iowa for 58 years before attaining emeritus status in 2015. In 1957, he started off as an assistant professor of art history before being promoted to associate professor in 1961. He served as a full professor from 1964 to 2015 and was director of the School of Art and Art History from 1973 to 1993. Dr. Tomasini’s first academic role was an instructor of art history at Finch College from 1954 to 1957. Dr. Tomasini has published three books: “The Barbaric Tremissis in Spain and Southern France: Anastasius to Leovigild,” “Early Visigothic Numismatics” and “Celebrating 150 Years of Haviland China, 1842-1992.” His articles include “The Art Museum: A University Center for the Visual Arts in the Ninth Decade” and “The Art Administrator as Advocate: The Politics of Advocacy” in the National Council of Art Administrators Bulletin. Dr. Tomasini is a member of the Renaissance Society of America and a past director of the Mid-America College Art Association, Midwest Art History Society and National Council of Arts Administrators. From 1981 to 1985, he served as director of the College Art Association, and from 1989 to 1993, he was the president and director of the Haviland Collectors International Foundation. Alongside his involvement in prestigious organizations, Dr. Tomasini was a Fulbright Scholar from 1951 to 1952, a fellow of the American Numismatic Society from 1957 to 1958, and a grantee of the American Philosophical Society from 1958 to 1959. He was also the recipient of a fellowship from the Belgian-American Foundation, a HEW planning grant for Renaissance Conference, and an Iowa Humanities Grant. WALLACE J.
