309 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine C hess was in Dr. George M. Kramer’s life since he was a young boy, and by high school he became exceptionally skilled, which led to him winning local competitions. After winning the U.S. Speed Championship in Detroit in 1950, Dr. Kramer was asked to join the U.S. Olympic Team. Mr. Kramer was also the winner of the Chess Championships in New York in 1945, aManhattan Chess Club Championship and three New Jersey State Chess Championships. Dr. Kramer was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, in 1950. He has also been a participant in the U.S. National Championship and many U.S. Open. A highlight of Dr. Kramer’s chess career was in 1946, where Samuel Reshevsky was to play for the world’s championship. Dr. Kramer showed Mr. Reshevsky four opening which might be employed in the match, and he used all of them. They resulted in four draws against his formidable Russian opponents. Dr. Kramer says that working with Mr. Reshevsky, and studying the games of Alekhine, Rubenstein, Reuben Fine and Dr. Euwe represented an enjoyable period of his life. Dr. Kramer’s primary career was as a chemist, from which he retired in 1994. He was a senior research associate and chemist at the Esso/Exxon Research and Engineering Company in Annandale, New Jersey, from 1957 to 1994. He received a BS in chemistry from Queens College in 1951, and an MS and PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955 and 1957, respectively. A noteworthy author and patentee outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Kramer co-authored more than 50 articles in scholarship publications, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Additionally, Dr. Kramer served in the U.S. Army from1952 to 1954. Dr. Kramer is amember of the American Chemical Society, United States Chess Federation, Sigma Xi and B’nai B’rith, and he is a fellow of the National Science Foundation. GEORGE M.
