32 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine “Kokopeli.” Written in New Mexico in 1990, the piece holds international renown and exemplifies the culture of Native Americans and their music. Ms. Hoover was overjoyed when one of her peers deemed her composition a “whole new genre of music for the flute.” Demonstrating versatility in her profession, Ms. Hoover was also a published author, her 2015 poetry book “This Way About” being published as an Editor’s Choice. She owed much of her success to her mentor, WilliamConcave. Working under his guidance for two years, he taught her more about music than any other composer during a time when it was taboo for women to write music. Ms. Hoover was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the International Alliance for Women in Music, the National Flute Association and the Conductors Guild. She passed away in 2018 and is survived by her husband, Richard Goodwin, and son, Norman Daniel Schwab. T he late Katherine Hoover was struck by the beauty of music the first time she heard Mozart at the age of 3. At 5 years old, she began taking piano lessons, where her love of music blossomed. Since that time, her legacy has lived on within her music, cementing her resounding influence in the creative realm. Ms. Hoover received a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music. For more than 50 years, Ms. Hoover was a composer and freelance flutist in New York City. She also taught theory and composition at the Teachers College of Columbia University from 1984 to 1989 and was also a teacher of theory and flute at the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School’s Preparatory Division between 1962 and 1984. Ms. Hoover was the recipient of the National Flute Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In 1989, Ms. Hoover was named Composer of the Year by the New York Music Teachers Association and received myriad awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
