She went on to complete a residency in general surgery at St. John/Oakland General Hospital and a second residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University’s Hutzel Hospital. She also completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Since then, Dr. Schimp has been the chief of gynecologic oncology at the Orlando Health University of Florida Health Cancer Center. She is also the chair of the robotics and minimally invasive surgical quality committee at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. This committee has been working on the cutting-edge in safer and more technology-friendly surgery since 2015. Dr. Schimp’s inspiration comes from wanting to offer women a safe place to have gynecologic care, as cancer seems to be the ultimate betrayal of the body. She aims to help women work through their disease process with love, kindness and also the best technology and medical care. In 2016, Dr. Schimp was named a Top Physician in Orlando, as well as a Best Doctor in America and to the Consumer’s Guide to Top Doctors. She has also been the recipient of the Patient’s Choice Award and America’s Top Oncologists Award. Dr. Schimp attributes her success to hard work and surrounding herself with a great team of people who love and support what she does. Dr. Schimp is a member of the International Gynecologic Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Schimp’s advice to aspiring gynecologic oncologists is that in order to be successful, you must put in the work and have positive thoughts to offer to patients every day. In five years’ time, Dr. Schimp plans to still be practicing and continuing to build the robotics program. D r. Veronica L.
