134 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine H ailing from a family of scholars, Dr. John Charles White believes his ancestry triggered his interest in history. He received a BA in history, magna cum laude with honors of exceptional distinction, from Washington and Lee University. He also obtained an MA and PhD in French history, both fromDuke University. Before commencing his career in academia, Dr. White was a first lieutenant and captain in the U.S. Army Reserves in France and Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Dr. White was an assistant and associate professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 1967 to 1976. He was promoted to full professor in 1976, simultaneously serving as chairman of the history department from 1970 to 1991. From 1988 to 1991, Dr. White was also the acting chairman of the department of modern foreign languages. In 1991, Dr. White attained the rank of professor emeritus. Upon retiring from academia, he spent an additional 17 years as a European travel consultant until 2008. Dr. White was the recipient of the Chalons and Dunkirk City Medals, and he won the Alabama Historical Commission Award of Merit. He was also granted a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor of Alabama and an Award of Merit from the Alabama Preservation Alliance. He also received special national recognition for meritorious service to myriad honor societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Sigma Iota. An author of articles on French administrative history in professional publications, Dr. White was a past president of the Alabama Association of Historians and a past director of the Consortium on Revolutionary Europe. He credits his father for his immeasurable influence on his character and career. The single most positive and strongest influence, however, came fromhis wife of 56 years, Dr. Carolyn West White, a professor emeritus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In his retirement, he enjoys reading, traveling abroad, local crafts and gourmet food shopping, with particular emphasis on French and Italian cuisines.
