151 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine L ooking up to the men in his family, Daniel Owen Smith longed to be a skilled engineer and commenced his career with his family. His step-father, uncles and kinsmen had entered “the trades” in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where they maintained the boilers and steam systems that powered and operated every aspect of the warships. After the war, the “family business” went to work in pulp and paper, petrochemicals, particularly Fossil Fuel powerhouses, with a focus on boilers, turbines andmiles of steampiping. Mr. Smith went to college to study mechanical engineering, but chose to immediately begin working within the “family business.” He worked on project sites up through the ranks from foreman, to job supervisor and finally project superintendent. As the years progressed, he moved into Upper Management as an estimator, project manager and international project manager on large projects overseas. As his older family members reached retirement, Mr. Smith spearheaded his own company to supply pre-fabricated high temperature removable insulation systems for use in plants nationally and overseas. As the owner of Southern Thermal Fabricators and Absolute Accurate Products (AAP), he utilized his past experience as a member of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Trades Union to blossom the company into what it is known as today. Mr. Smith is the author of two books, “Industrial Insulation: A General Guide to Fabrication and Installation in Shop and Field” and “Cloth Removable and Reusable Insulation for General Industry.” Looking back on his career, he recalls serving as an instructor to Train the Trainers as a highlight of his career, and looking forward, he intends to experience continued growth and career success.
