224 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. John Alexander Oates III built himself a reputable career as a physician, educator and biomedical scientist. Regrettably, Dr. Oates passed away in July 2019, but remains a renowned force in his field for his contributions to the co-discovery of antihypertensive effects, elucidation of a number of interactions between drugs in humans, and groundbreaking research in biochemistry, pharmacology and pathophysiology. Dr. Oates received a BS, magna cum laude, from Wake Forest University in 1953 and an MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1956. By 1962, he completed an internship and assistant residency at the New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center while spending 1958 to 1962 with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Dr. Oates was a master of the American College of Physicians and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Board certified in the subspecialty of hypertension, Dr. Oates was a valuable faculty member at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine beginning in 1969. He served as a professor of medicine and pharmacology, and in 1988, was promoted to Thomas F. Frist Senior Professor of Medicine. From 1983 to 1997, Dr. Oates was chairman of the Department of Medicine, and from 1974 to 1984, was a Joe & Morris Werthan Professor of Investigative Medicine. In 2010, Dr. Oates received the Earl Sutherland Award for Achievement in Research and the Novartis Award Council for High Blood Pressure Research, and in 2004, the General Clinic Research Centers Program granted him the Award of Excellence in Clinical Research. He also earned the Distinguished Achievement Award from the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Award of Merit from the American Heart Association, and Oscar B. Hunter Award from the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Dr. Oates will be remembered as an iconic leader in medicine, pharmacology and academia.
