219 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Richard T. Miyamoto started his undergraduate years on a pre-dental track in which he took the same classes as pre-med students. Soon enough, he wanted to focus his studies on pre- med, which later led to his specific interests in otolaryngology and microsurgery. Dr. Miyamoto received a BS from Wheaton College in 1966, an MD from the University of Michigan in 1970, and an MS in otology from the University of Southern California in 1978. Additionally, he holds an honorary Doctor of Engineering from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. By 1975, Dr. Miyamoto completed two residencies, one in surgery at Butterworth Hospital and one in otolaryngology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. From 1977 to 1978, he was a fellow in otology and neurotology at St. Vincent Hospital and Otologic Medical Group in Los Angeles. Additionally, Dr. Miyamoto served in the U.S. Air Force as a major between 1975 and 1977. Having quickly moved up from assistant to associate and full professor at Indiana University’s School of Medicine, Dr. Miyamoto naturally took on high level roles, which he sustained throughout his career at the university. From 1987 to 2014, he served as chairman of otolaryngology head and neck surgery, and from 1982 to 2014, he was the chief of otology and neurotology. In 1991, he was named Arilla Spence DeVault Professor. Dr. Miyamoto was the chief of otolaryngology head and neck surgery at Wishard Memorial Hospital from 1979 to 2002. Notably, Dr. Miyamoto was the recipient of the Ritchey Emeriti Faculty Service Award and the Indiana University President’s Medal in 2018. In 2014, he was granted the Award of Merit from the American Otological Society and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Miyamoto is a member of the American Auditory Society, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Academy of Sciences, American Neurotology Society, American Otological Society, Royal Society of Medicine, Association for Research in Otolaryngology, New York Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
