98 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A s a graduate student of history at Harvard University and then at the University of Oxford in England, Wm. Roger Louis discovered his passion for the history of the British Empire and decided that would be the focus of his career in history. Dr. Louis received a BA from the University of Oklahoma in 1959, an MA from Harvard in 1960, and a PhD in 1962 and DLitt in 1979, both from Oxford. Additionally, he achieved an honorary DLitt from Westminster College in 1998. Dr. Louis began his career as an assistant professor turned associate professor of history at Yale University from 1962 to 1970. From 1970 to 1985, he served as a professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin, and he now serves as the director of British studies, Kerr Chair in English History and Culture and, in 1998, was named a distinguished teaching professor. Alongside his studies and research, Dr. Louis has contributed to numerous publications and creative works. Of his long repertoire of writing, Dr. Louis recently published “Serendipitous Adventures with Britannia” in 2019, “Indispensable Reading: 1,001 Books” in 2018, “Effervescent Adventures with Britannia” in 2017, “Resplendent Adventures with Britannia” in 2015 and “The 1967 Arab-Israeli War” in 2012. Notably, Dr. Louis was named Kluge Chair of the Library of Congress in 2010 and Professor of the Year at UT Austin in 2009. A distinguished visitor of the history department at Peking University in China, Dr. Louis was a scholar at Oxford and the Brookings Institution. Similarly, Dr. Louis has also lectured at the London School of Economics, Nottingham University, American University in Cairo, Rice University and the University of Connecticut. A past president of the American Historical Association in 2001, Dr. Louis is also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Woodrow Wilson Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Institute of Indian Studies, Guggenheim Foundation and All Souls College.
