In 1963, he earned a BS from Stanford University and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, where he earned an MS and a PhD in 1964 and 1968, respectively. Following his receipt of his PhD, Dr. Grimes was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Basel in Switzerland for one year, as well as at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California for an additional year. Hired by the laboratory soon thereafter, he served as a physicist from 1971 to 1981 before departing from his prominent role. During the latter stages of his tenure, he also began teaching as a visiting professor at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in 1978 and was soon hired full-time as a physics professor in 1985. At Ohio University, Dr. Grimes served as a researcher and director of the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory until 1991. That same year, he was named a distinguished professor emeritus. Remaining a consultant through the present day, Dr. Grimes consults for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He has also demonstrated much versatility in his profession, as he has contributed several articles to scientific journals and edited two books, “Moment Methods” in 1979 and “Neutron- Nucleus Collisions” in 1985. Dr. Grimes is a fellow of the American Physical Society, who named him a Distinguished Professor in 2001. He also maintained affiliation with Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa. As a testament to his success, he was named an Outstanding Referee in 2008 in light of the culmination of work he has conducted throughout his career. Listed in the 72nd edition of Who’s Who in America in 2019, Dr. Grimes enjoys reading, photography and traveling in his spare time. S ince his formative years, Dr. Steven M. Grimes has been interested in physics and engineering. When he was a young boy, he helped his father, an engineer, design the family house and subsequently discussed with him the complexities of heating, cooling and electrical connections.
