As a testament to his success, Dr. Gustafsson was named a Distinguished Professor of Dalian Medical University in China in 2015, having previously been honored with a Grand Silver Medal from the Karolinska Institute in 2011, and an Award of Merit from the Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund and Grand Nordic Fernstrom Prize from Lund University, both in 2009. Named an honorary fellow of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, he is also a noted foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Married with one son, Dr. Gustafsson intends to continue conducting research and growing within his profession. He has been highlighted in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the World. D r. Jan-Ake Gustafsson is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on hormone receptors, who is most renowned for his discovery of a previously unknown estrogen receptor in the mid-1990s. Since that time, he has dedicated his efforts to researching various hormone dependent cancers. Since 2009, he has notably served as the founding director of the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling at the University of Houston, as well as a Robert A. Welch professor. Impressively, Dr. Gustafsson was awarded in excess of $5 million in grants by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas in 2011, which he and his colleagues used to develop novel methods for treating prostate cancer. Likewise, he and his colleagues have also tested plant-derived and synthetic chemicals that resemble human hormones in an effort to prevent and combat prostate cancer. To prepare for his career, Dr. Gustafsson attended the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where he received a PhD in 1968 and an MD in 1971.
