Henry Kelly’s career has spannedmany areas at the intersection of science and policy with a particular focus in energy efficiency and renewable energy. In this regard, he took inspiration from his father, who was a pioneering figure in science and policy. Attending Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Dr. Kelly was the recipient of a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. Four years later in 1971, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Commencing his career with the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in 1970, Dr. Kelly went on to serve as a congressional science fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and project manager and program manager in the Office of Technical Assessment in Washington, D.C. From there, he advanced to associate director of the Solar Energy Research Institute for the following three years and senior associate from 1981 to 1992. From 1993 to 2000, Dr. Kelly was an assistant director in the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President in Washington, D.C. Dr. Kelly was president of the Federation of American Scientists from 2000 to 2009, and served the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., as principal deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy, acting assistant secretary, and chief scientist to the director of the Office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis. A former senior scientist at the Michigan Institute for Data Science of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Kelly most recently served as a non-resident senior fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. Married to his wife Ann since May 10, 1969, Dr. Kelly is the proud father of two children, Sophia Elizabeth and Alice Bridget. Born in Boston on July 10, 1945 to parents Harry Charles and Irene Ermina (Andes) Kelly, he currently resides in Arlington, Virginia.
