Mr. Johnson was recognized early in life for his academic success by being included in the honors program at Florida State University. He graduated cum laude with a BS in meteorology with a minor in mathematics. There, he was inducted into Chi Epsilon Pi, Pi Mu Epsilon and Phi Beta Kappa. The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the oldest academic honor society in the United States, of which he is still a sustaining member. Mr. Johnson is a fifth generation Florida native and passionate meteorologist whose life was personally impacted by hurricanes on several occasions. Those firsthand interactions amplified his zest to study and evaluate weather phenomena. Knowing from an early age that his destiny would be in the meteorological field, he began logging daily weather records at the age of 6. He later joined the American Meteorological Society (AMS), for whom he was elected presi- dent of the West Central chapter for 14 years. He also was awarded the AMS Television Seal of Approval and certified as a Consulting Meteorol- ogist and a Broadcast Meteorologist. Mr. Johnson produced and anchored weather- casts for Television Station WTVT in Tampa. He was consistently #1 in the ratings in his time slot. His energetic weathercasts “owned” the weather story in many severe weather situations, includ- ing coverage of hurricanes, tornadoes, freezes and floods. Starting with his implementation of the first all-computer graphics weather presenta- tion in the country in 1979, to social media in the 2020s, he has always been on the cutting edge of technology. Mr. Johnson considers earning the public trust by turning to him for timely and calm advice during life-threatening severe weather events to be one of his greatest achievements. In the coming years, Mr. Johnson looks forward to continuing to work until he is no longer able. A nthony “Andy” Johnson is a board certi f ied meteorologist whose professional career has spanned over 41 years. After 34 years of on-air weather broadcasting with WTVT-TV in Tampa, he took early retirement from the television industry, but continued the consulting work that he had begun at WTVT.
