She advocates on behalf of intellectually or mentally disabled students and those who have speech, communication and hearing problems. Holding two bachelor’s degrees from David Lipscomb College and two master’s degrees fromWayne State University and Nova University, she credits her faith, family and educators as pivotal forces to her success. A former county advocate for the deaf and director of the Four County Center for the Handicapped, Ms. Arnold was a special education teacher for the Rockford and Warren City Systems in Michigan and Hobbs Municipal Schools in New Mexico. She notably accrued 35 years of special education teaching in Florida. A prolific writer, Ms. Arnold’s “Ol’ Time Preacher Man,” a biography of her minister/sailor husband, was exhibited at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. She was a 35-year deaf advocate to the Hearing Society of Volusia County, a pioneer of Project TREE and director of Project ACTION. Likewise, she received grants in public welfare, science, gardening, newspapers in education and FUTURES. B oasting a diversified background in education, Margaret Louise Barron has been serving as a music educator in Toledo Public Schools in Ohio since 1975. Previously teaching in Boston and Mississippi, as well as abroad in Croatia, she first earned a Bachelor of Science in music education from Arkansas State University in 1954 and a Master of Music in education from the Boston Conservatory in 1960, where she was introduced to singing and playing the piano. Conducting further studies overseas in Austria and Yugoslavia, she has been instrumental in her contributions to African American civil rights history from the emancipation of slaves to the March on Washington. Since 1986, Ms. Barron has sang with the Toledo Opera Chorus and was a singer for the Boston Opera Chorus in the 1960s. Notably, she has represented Toledo in Hungarian concerts and performed a concert at the University of Cambridge in England. She also received a standing ovation for her performance at Miles College. Maintaining affiliation with the Ohio Music Education Association, Ms. Barron has enjoyed exposing her students to a variety of music and seeing her students’ responses to her teaching.
