He was named Young Man of the Year in Sacramento in 1957, and notably received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Hendrix College in 1986. He served as a trustee from 1988 to 2000 and has been a significant contributor to that school. Marquis Who’s Who granted him a coveted Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, which was followed by a similar honor by The Wall Street Journal in 2020. He continues to be in demand as a lecturer of Christian Ethics in Business. He finds the most rewarding aspects of his career to be witnessing the joy and satisfaction of others when they become aware that they have done an excellent job. Mr. Farr is an accomplished athlete and has earned national, regional, and local championships. He has served as president of the Hartford Golf Club and has held other leadership positions in religious, social and charitable organizations. I nfluenced by a strong religious background, Richard Claborn Farr believed that the teachings of the Bible could be applied directly to the business world and planned his academic education accordingly. Earning a BA in philosophy and religion from Hendrix College in 1952, he later completed coursework at the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and the Stanford University School of Business. With only a bachelor’s degree, Mr. Farr was hired by Procter & Gamble as an engineer, and subsequently served in numerous executive roles before departing from that company to work for the Continental Grain Company in New York and Paris as senior vice president between 1965 and 1970. From there, Mr. Farr served Lehman Brothers, Inc., in New York as managing director from 1970 to 1971, Heublein, Inc., as corporate vice president from 1971 to 1979 and Crown Zellerbach Corporation as executive vice president from 1979 to 1983. Since 1980, Mr. Farr has been the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of the eponymously named Farr Investments in West Hartford, Connecticut.
