Renowned for her philanthropic efforts, Ms. Whealey has sat on the board of directors of Ohio Women, Inc., since 1995, having also served as secretary since 1997. She was affiliated with Athens Community Television, Inc., from 2006 to 2019 and was involved with the National Volunteer Caregiving Network, Organize! Ohio, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and the Ohio Alliance for the Environment. Ms. Whealey’s accolades include the Unsung Unitarian Universalist Award from Ohio- Meadville District, UUA, Girl Scout Thanks Badge, How-To Award from the Educational Press Association of America and Donna Chen Women’s Equity Award fromOhio University. She was named a Peacemaker by the Appalachian Peace and Justice Network and an Outstanding Feminist by the Athens Herstory Celebration. In 2016, she earned the Social Justice Award from the United Campus Ministry. L ois Deimel Whealey is a citizen activist in Athens, Ohio, after dedicating decades of her career to education, advocacy and philanthropy. After earning a BA in history from Stanford University in 1951, she was a fifth grade teacher at the Owyhee Combined School in Nevada before becoming a seventh grade teacher at Fort Knox Dependent Schools in Kentucky. Traveling to Oxford, England, she was a teacher of adult basic education for the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1957 before returning to the United States to serve as a sixth grade teacher at Amerman Elementary School in Michigan. A former eighth grade English and social studies teacher at Slauson Middle School, she also earned an MEd from the University of Michigan in 1955. Ms. Whealey was an administrative assistant for a Humanities Conference in Athens, Ohio, from 1974 to 1976 and again in 1983, and a part- time instructor at Ohio University from 1966 to 1968 and again in 1975. In the 1990s, she served Rural Action as an AmeriCorps VISTA.
