Subsequently, he graduated from American International College with a bachelor’s degree in personnel management and industrial relations in 1969. Notably, he was third in his class out of more than 500 students. After fulfilling the education requirement, Colonel Heltonattended theOfficer Training School and graduatedwith distinction, thereby receiving a commission as a Second Lieutenant after 15 years in the military. He then attended the Air Force Personnel School, graduating as the “Outstanding Honor Graduate.” Later, he was selected by the Air Force Institute of Technology to attend a civilian university. He chose the Eisenberg School of Business at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where in 1976, he was awarded a Master of Science in personnel management and industrial relations. There, he was selected to Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society and named a “Distinguished Graduate” by the Armed Forces Institute of Technology. After graduation and with only six years of commission service, Colonel Helton was promoted to Major three years early, as well as selected to attend the Armed Forces Staff College. Thereafter, he was selected for Lieutenant Colonel and attendance at the Air War College. He accepted the promotion, but decided not to continue his service. As was his choice, he decided to retire after 30 years of service in 1985. Throughout his career, Colonel Helton served eight years as a military police officer, five years as a command post controller, 15 years in human resources and 25 years as a real estate broker. To attest to his success, he also earned five Meritorious Service Medals and an Air Force Commendation Medal. Married to Mary Denery Helton since 1958, the pair share four children: Michael, Bonnie, John and Kathleen. He also has eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born in Southeast Kentucky, Clarence “Chuck” Helton enlisted in the U.S. Air Force following graduation from high school. While serving in the Air Force, he attended night school for seven years, including one year with the University of the Philippines.
