198 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Born in 1944 and reared in Lawton, Oklahoma, the son of a letter carrier and language instructor, Dr. Gerald Rankin Robertson became interested in science during high school. He received an AA from Cameron College in 1964, a BS in chemistry from Oklahoma State University in 1966, then attended and graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1970. Postgraduatemedical training in internal medicine was completed at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine affiliatedhospitals in 1970 and 1973 to 1977. He served as captain in theMedical Corp of the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Since 1977, Dr. Robertson has practiced internal medicine in Gallup, New Mexico. He also served many years working as an emergency room physician. He has been affiliated with Cibola Medical Foundation and Rehoboth Christian Hospital, serving as president of the Cibola Foundation and as Chief of Staff of the hospital on several occasions. He helped negotiate the merger of the two community hospitals, RMCH and McKinley General Hospital, in 1983 and facilitated the relocation of the Cibola Medical Clinic to the site of the merged facility. He helped to establish the hospice program at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital, and he remains active as medical director of a hospice program in Gallup. Professional affiliations have included the American Medical Association, New Mexico Medical Society and American College of Physicians. Dr. Robertson has received honors for service to the hospital, including the Thomas Carmony Award at RMCH. He attributes his success to various mentors, including his church youth director Whit Ozier, infectious disease professor Dr. Louis Weinstein and medical oncology mentor Dr. John Saiki. Community activities have included active membership in the Gallup Rotary Club, Gallup First United Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer for many years, and continued participation in the Cibola Medical Foundation in its funding of medical missions and projects locally and abroad. From his experience, his advice to aspiring medical professionals is to take an active interest in the patient as a person to better establish a meaningful and therapeutic relationship.
