Shaffer decided to become an architect during his sophomore year of high school. Excelling at the art of drafting and design since that time, he went on to earn a BArch from Kansas State University in 1970. Joining Duncan Architects that same year, he held the role of architect until 1977, whereupon he joined James E. Taylor and Associates as an associate for the following two years. In 1979, Mr. Shaffer founded his own architectural firm, titled RLS Architects, in Prairie Village, Kansas, a position he still holds today. Maintaining the same level of design and service that he had in his earlier years, Mr. Shaffer is the architect for numerous projects across more than 25 states. Maintaining affiliation with the American Institute of Architects, he is a past chapter president of two Kiwanis Clubs, past governor of the Missouri/Arkansas District of Kiwanis International, and past treasurer and president of the Johnson County Kansas Chamber of Commerce President’s Council. Mr. Shaffer received the Architect of the Year Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2014. He has also been highlighted in several Who’s Who publications since 1985.
