A consultant and public speaker, Dr. Aldridge is also a writer, having authored “Imagine a World: Pioneering Black Women Sociologists” in 2009. She has also been a co-author, co-editor and editor, and has contributed over 84 articles to professional journals and monographs. She was a co-organizer of the 30th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta and a co-founder of the KESS NSONA Health and Education Foundation. Dr. Aldridge has accrued over 160 accolades, including the 2010 CoxJohnson-Frazier Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association. She is a past president of the National Council for Black Studies and Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists. Several accolades have been named in her honor, and her biography resides in the Library of Congress. Dr. Delores PatriciaAldridgewas recruited to Emory University in 1971. The first tenured African American female faculty member, she was brought to Emory to establish its African American Studies Program. She also served as a coordinator of Black studies, assistant professor, associate professor and director of African American studies. Subsequently, she was promoted to full professor of sociology in 1988 and Grace Towns Hamilton Distinguished Professor of Sociology and African American Studies in 1990. She attained emeritus status in 2012. Previously, Dr. Aldridge served Lafayette Community Centers as an executive director, Winter Haven Hospital Center for Behavioral Health as acting chief of social services, and St. John of God Brothers Child Guidance Clinic in Ireland as a psychiatric social worker. She commenced her career in 1963 as a social worker for the Florida Department of Children and Families. Dr. Aldridge pursued an education at Clark Atlanta University, earning a BA in 1963 and MSW in 1966. She matriculated in Purdue University and earned a PhD in 1971, the first one bestowed upon an African DR.
