72 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION director of the U.S. Army-sponsored Junior Science and Humanities Symposium from 1971 to 1990. Dr. Finn taught neurocomputing and environmental physics courses, along with introductory courses for scientists and engineers. Co-authoring the textbook “Fundamental University Physics,” Dr. Finn produced the first and second volumes in 1967 and the third volume in 1968. They have since been translated into 11 different languages. Demonstrating versatility in his field, Dr. Finn also worked with the Cerebellum Corporation in producing a series of videos for basic physics, which won a Golden Video Award. Likewise, he was a program manager in the international division of the National Science Foundation from 1980 to 1982. Post-retirement, Dr. Finn has served as president of the Elm, Oakridge and Lynn Civic Organization in Chevy Chase, Maryland, since 1992. He also served as a board member of the Greater Bethesda-Chevy Chase Coalition. Interested in science from a young age, Dr. Edward Joseph Finn earned a BS in physics from the College of the Holy Cross in 1951 and an MS in physics from Catholic University in 1955. While pursuing his master’s degree, he taught as an instructor of physics at Georgetown University between 1952 and 1954 and worked summers at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) as a physicist in the Sonar Systems Branch of the Sound Division from 1953 to 1954. Briefly serving as an assistant professor at St. Vincent College for one year, he was then hired full-time at the NRL in 1955, holding his position until 1978. Concurrent to his role at the NRL, Dr. Finn began serving as an assistant professor at Georgetown University in 1956 while pursuing his doctorate. In 1962, he obtained his PhDwith his doctoral thesis on a theoretical model to predict energy levels and other physical properties on alkali halide molecules. Escalating to the rank of associate professor in 1963 and then full professor in 1977, he subsequently retired from Georgetown in 1996. During his tenure, he was also a department chairman between 1990 and 1993, as well as EDWARD JOSEPH FINN, PHD PROFESSOR (RETIRED) Georgetown University Chevy Chase, MD
