254 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT D rawing upon more than 35 years of experience in the legal industry, the late Karen Hastie Williams eased into a well- deserved retirement in 2004 after spending 22 years as a partner of Crowell & Moring LLP in Washington, D.C. Revered for her contributions to the field of law, between 1973 and 1975, she clerked for Chief Judge Spottswood William Robinson III for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and then for Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall of the Supreme Court of the United States. Prior to obtaining her most recent role, Ms. Williams was an associate of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Kampelman from 1975 to 1977 and spent three years as chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on the Budget from 1977 to 1980. Thereafter, she was an administrator in the Office of Federal Procurement Policy within the U.S. Office of Management and Budget from 1980 to 1981, where she served under former President Jimmy Carter. Notably, she also spent three years on the Internal Revenue Service’s Oversight Board under former President George W. Bush. Alongside her primary endeavors, Ms. Williams sat on the board of directors of Chubb Limited from 2000 to 2010 and SunTrust Banks from 2002 to 2011. Additionally, she served on the boards of Crestar Bank and the Gannett Company, and became the first chair of the Folger Shakespeare Library’s board of governors in 2005. Likewise, she was involved in the Women Achievement Program at Stanford University. Ms. Williams pursued a formal education at Bates College, earning a BA in 1966. She then received an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1967 and a JD from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in 1973. To remain abreast of developments within the legal arena, Ms. Williams was as chair of the public contract law section of the American Bar Association from 1992 to 1993 and a member of the board of directors of the Legal Defense Fund for the NAACP.
