Roger Austin Newell is an eminent geologist and mining executive whose interest in geology was sparked as a teenager. Reading a book on geology during his high school years, his fascination with the subject continued through adulthood. He earned a BS in geology from the University of Oregon in 1965, an MS in geology and economic geology from the Colorado School of Mines in 1971, and a PhD in applied earth sciences with a specialty in minerals exploration from Stanford University in 1975. Since 2016, he has notably served as a geology consultant. Prior to his current post, Dr. Newell served Midway Gold, Inc., as director between 2012 and 2016 and Lake Victoria Mining Co. as president and chief executive officer from 2009 to 2015. Likewise, he was vice president of development for Capital Gold, Inc., from 2000 to 2009, having formerly held the same role for Western Exploration, Inc., from 1995 to 2000. Earlier in his career, Gold Fields Mining Co. employed him as an exploration regional manager between 1989 and 1995. Likewise, Dr. Newell spent time as an exploration geologist and exploration manager for Newmont Exploration Ltd. between 1977 and 1989. He commenced his career in 1974 as a geologist and researcher for Kennecott Exploration Ltd. While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Newell cites his tenure with Newmont Exploration as a crowning achievement. Additionally, he is especially proud of serving as a consultant on a gold project in Southeastern Arizona titled “Mexican Hat.” A fellow of the Geological Society of America and the Society of Economic Geologists, where he served as foundation president from 1989 to 1992, Dr. Newell also maintains membership with the American Institute of Mining and Exploration. He is a past member of Sigma Xi and a 50-year member of the Society of Mining Engineers. Featured in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the West in 1993, Dr. Newell is a past president of the Mexican subsidiary of Capital Gold Corporation, New York City, which acquired and developed a gold mine in Sonora, Mexico, named El Chanate.
