Thereafter, Ms. Hummel studied at three colleges in Mexico, completed coursework at La Universita Italiana per Stranieri di Perugia and graduate studies at the Catholic University. She obtained a master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) from Denver University. Ms. Hummel’s husband, Charles Stuart Todd Mallett, pronounced [Mah- Let], was career army whose background was airborne infantry. When he became Military Attaché for U.S. Embassies in Mexico, Panama and Spain, her distaff duties included arranging formal dinners and hosting Generals, Admirals and White House officials who frequently arrived. At the top of those events was President and Mrs. Kennedy visit to Mexico City. The most uncomfortable situation was a cocktail dinner that included Manuel Noriega, who later became de facto ruler of Panama. After the Spain assignment, Colonel Mallett retired. They moved to metropolitan Washington, D.C. Mrs. Mallett began a business career first at TheWorld Bank. Then as BDM’s Corporate Librarian, she created an advanced Information Services Center. She obtained Top Secret government clearance. Overlapping Ms. Hummel’s professional occupations was her work in immigration. Foreign embassy women were being compromised by diplomats. Escaping their situation, they fled into D.C. without documentation. Ms. Hummel helped them find lodging and process legal paperwork. In 1983, the Fairfax (Virginia) County Board of Supervisors bestowed upon her a Special Achievement Award for helping those women. Similarly, at an earlier time in Panama, she gave aid to patients of the Palo Seco Leprosy Asylum. She, and her seven-year-old daughter, brought food, clothing and conversation to the sufferers of Hansen’s disease. Ms. Hummel was a member and distinguished president of the Fairfax County Public Library Board. Four large libraries were built under her leadership.
