78 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION P eggy R. Henry-Watkins was inspired to enter academia by her own teachers, as well as family members who also excelled as educators. Attending Bennett College, she graduated with a BS in biology in 1968 before becoming a biology teacher at Western High School, a role she held for two years. For the following two decades, she served as a science teacher and department chair at Sedgefield Junior High School between 1970 and 1990. During this tenure, Ms. Henry-Watkins was a science teacher at the Staff Development Center’s Time Release Program affiliated with the Discovery Place and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 1982. Concurrently, she was a science department chair and biology teacher at Providence High School beginning in 1989. she departed from Sedgefield in 1990 and retired from Providence High School in 2007. A recipient of an MS in biology education from North Carolina A&T State University, Ms. Henry-Watkins is a past textbook reviewer for AMSCO and Glencoe Macmillan with McGraw-Hill. She has also been a contributing writer for publications and served as an adult education evening instructor at Central Community College. Ms. Henry-Watkins developed a hands-on, self-paced audio tutorial lab-oriented package for the Exceptional Children Science Education Program with the National Science Foundation in 1979. She was named North Carolina’s Academically Gifted Teacher of the Year in 1989, North Carolina’s Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year in 1983 and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 1980. Additionally, she was listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers from 2006 to 2007. Certified by the Academy for the Gifted and Talented, Ms. Henry-Watkins also holds a mentoring certification from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, for whom she also sat on the scholarship committee. Presently, she maintains affiliation with the North Carolina Science Teachers Association and North Carolina Academically Gifted Teacher Association. PEGGY R.
