Wareing Award for Diligent Scholarship and Devotion to Duty in the Field of Internal Medicine in 1977. He maintains affiliation with the American College of Surgeons. Stewart is noteworthy for being the Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine since 2009. Starting in 2015, he has served as the chief of thoracic surgery at UMKC and the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Earlier in his career, he was a surgeon at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1996 to 2009 and was a surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in which he achieved tenure in 1994. Furthermore, Dr. Stewart has lent his valuable expertise to academic institutions in teaching residents and medical students. To prepare for his career, Dr. Stewart pursued a formal education at DePauwUniversity, receiving a BA in chemistry and Spanish, with highest honors, in 1974. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from the University of Colorado with an MD in 1978.
