Subsequently, she served as a resident in child psychiatry at the Hawthorn Center, resident in pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical Center and resident in psychiatry at Austin State Hospital. Joining Austin State Hospital in 1964, Dr. Sutton served as director of children’s psychiatric services and chief of child psychiatry through 1989. Concurrently, she served as program director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program from 1971 to 2003 and director of children’s psychiatric services and adolescent psychiatric services from 1988 to 1989. In 1989, she became program director of the Austin Psychiatric Residency Program, a role she held until 2003, as well as director of the Psychiatric Residency Program, maintaining this position until retiring in 2010. She was also director of training and research and acting clinical director of medical/psychiatric services. Lending her expertise to other facilities, Dr. Sutton served as a child psychiatrist for Seton Shoal Creek Hospital. Dr. Sutton also excelled as an educator in the psychiatric and pediatrics departments of Texas A&M University, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and the University of Texas at Austin. A life fellow of the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, she is also a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Sutton was honored with the Dr. Beverly Jewell Sutton Endowment for Psychiatric Education with Seton Healthcare Family and was inducted as founder of the Central Texas Academic Health Care Hall of Fame. She is grateful to her parents, Beryl and Cora Jewell, husband Dr. H. Eldon Sutton, and daughters, Drs. Susan Sutton and Caroline Clark, for giving her the life she dreamed. D rawing inspiration from her family physician, Dr. Beverly Jewell Sutton desired to become a child psychiatrist. She attended Grand Rapids Community College and graduated with an AS in 1952.
