FREIREICH, MD D esiring to enter the medical field from a young age, Dr. Emil J. Freireich attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a BS in 1947 and an MD in 1949. Completing an internship at Cook County Hospital and residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, he began his career at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston in 1953 as a research associate in hematology. Subsequently, he excelled as senior investigator and head of leukemia service with the U.S. Public Health Service and National Cancer Institute for the following decade. Joining the University of Texas System Cancer Center in 1965, Dr. Freireich served the institution as a chief researcher in hematology, head of the Department on the Development of Therapeutics, chairman of the Department of Hematology, professor of medicine and director of the Adult Leukemia Research Program, a role he has held since 1985. Concurrently, he has been a professor of medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center since 1973. He is renowned for his research in acute leukemia and leukocyte physiology, and notably developed the first successful platelet replacement therapy. A registered nurse in Texas, Dr. Margaret Gallagher is recognized for her leadership in nursing administration, neonatal nursing education, and mental health advocacy. She holds a BSN from the University of the Incarnate Word, MSN from the Catholic University of America and PhD in urban studies from Old Dominion University. Prior to retiring in 2012, she served as principal of Margaret Gallagher and Associates Healthcare Consulting for four years. She formerly spent time with Ben Taub General Hospital as an associate chief nursing officer and director of women and infant services, as well as with the MD Anderson Cancer Center as the Administrative Director of Pediatrics. Additionally, she held clinical and management positions in neonatal and pediatric nursing in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Ohio and Georgia, and taught at Norfolk State University for nearly a decade. Post-retirement, Dr. Gallagher excels at NAMI Homefront, supporting family members of military personnel and veterans who struggle with mental illness. She is especially proud of mentoring nurse leaders and expanding the Resource Mothers Program in an effort to reduce infant mortality among pregnant teenagers.
