James Francis Leary matriculated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a BS in aerospace and astronautics and an additional BS in philosophy, both in 1970. He went on to achieve an MS in physics from the University of New Hampshire in 1974 and PhD in biophysics from Pennsylvania State University in 1977. Additionally, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1977 to 1978. Dr. Leary commenced his career at the University of Rochester, serving as an assistant professor of pathology from 1978 to 1984 and an associate professor from 1985 to 1994. Simultaneously, he was a professor of internal medicine, pathology and microbiology/immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston from 1994 to 2005. Alongside these endeavors, he was a director of institutional development and senior scientist at the Sealy Center for Hematology and Oncology and the Sealy Center for Molecular Studies. From 2005 to 2015, he taught and conducted research as an endowed professor of nanomedicine and as professor of biomedical engineering and basic medical science at Purdue University’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, attaining emeritus status in 2015. Post-academic retirement, Dr. Leary has excelled as founder and president of Aurora Life Technologies LLC. Holding 10 U.S. patents, he is responsible for the invention of high-speed flow cytometry and rare event analysis. He is recognized for being one of the first scientists funded by NASA to conduct studies in nanomedicine, which he is currently documenting in a textbook, recently completed “Fundamentals of Nanomedicine,” to be published in 2021. He has served on over 130 National Institutes of Health study sections and on multiple journal editorial boards. A fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Society andSocietyof Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers, Dr. Leary attributes his success to multidisciplinary training in science and engineering, enabling insight and solutions to complex interdisciplinary problems.
