DICKEY, PHD A physicist in Maryland, Dr. Joseph W. Dickey has served Johns Hopkins University’s materials science department as a senior research scientist since 1996. Prior to this appointment, he served in the same capacity for the David Taylor Research Center for 31 years between 1965 and 1996. Believing in the capabilities of the sciences for the improvement of humankind, he holds three U.S. patents on non- destructive evaluation. Likewise, he has developed sensing systems and performed experimental research in physical acoustics and theoretical work in elastic scattering ultra-sonics and structural dynamics. Dr. Dickey holds a BS in physics from Drexel University, an MS in physics from the University of New Hampshire and a PhD in physics from the Catholic University of America. A 1983 and 1984 Congressional Science Fellow in the U.S. Congress, he also lent his expertise to the U.S. Naval Academy as a visiting associate professor. He is a past president of the board of directors of the Maryland Federation of Art and is treasurer of the American Association of Woodturners. Alongside these pursuits, Dr. Dickey has owned and managed an American Chestnut Restoration Orchard with the American Chestnut Foundation since 2005. D rawing upon more than 30 years’ expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, Melvin E. Karau first served as an Army medic with the United States Armed Forces, where he worked alongside several medical professionals, thus prompting his interest in the field. Subsequent to an interview with Abbott Laboratories, Mr. Karau was employed by the acclaimed company as a pharmaceutical manager in 1957 until retiring in 1990. During his tenure, he specialized in the manufacturing and selling of prescriptions to medical doctors. Notably, he played a significant role in the synthetization of various remedies, including Rondec T, Rondec S and Rondec, and took part in the development of a $1 billion product Ensure, which he personally proposed to the Abbott Laboratories board, who approved the product for market. To attest to his success, Mr. Karau was bestowed with a Material of the Year Award and an Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award, and maintains professional longevity with his local Rotary Club. He holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and conservation from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Business Administration from Roosevelt University. MELVIN E. KARAU
