211 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Lester L. Carter Jr.’s destiny was forever alteredwhen he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1950. Only two years before his enlistment, President Harry Truman signed an Executive Order, ending formal segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces. Despite the formal end of segregation, most Black individuals were still assigned menial kitchen duties. However, Dr. Carter showed exceptional potential on an aptitude test. Dr. Carter was eventually assigned as the acting medic on the USS Tortuga (LSD-26), a troop launching ship deployed off of the Korean coast. After receiving his honorable discharge on August 10, 1954, Dr. Carter decided to apply to pharmacy school at Creighton University in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. During his last two years at Creighton, Dr. Carter had a part-time job at a local pharmacy. He was initially assigned menial tasks. After earning his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Creighton in 1958, he continued working at the pharmacy, but initially, store management resisted promoting him to pharmacist. Once given an opportunity, Dr. Carter excelled, and within a few years, he had been promoted to vice president and head pharmacist. Dr. Carter and his young family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1966, and within six months, he purchased his own pharmacy. Over the decades, the neighborhood surrounding Carter Drug Store, Inc., gradually changed from predominantly German-American to African American. The store thrived for more than 47 years under Dr. Carter until he and his wife, Irene, both suffered serious health issues in 2014. Dr. Carter underwent five surgeries, including two hip replacements. Irene suffered from terminal lung cancer and passed away in 2015. Dr. Carter sold Carter Drug to Hayat Pharmacy in 2014. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He also returned that year towork for Hayat Pharmacy as a natural supplements consultant. In 2017, he wrote and published a book, “Healing the Human Body with God’s Remedies,” which has sold nearly 3,000 copies to date. Dr. Carter passed away in January of 2022. DR. LESTER L. CARTER JR.
