313 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY As chief geologist and corporate president of Northwest Geoscience, P.C., since 2009, Alan Barry Nelson has exemplified his aptitude for geologic systems and his interest in humankind’s usage of natural resources for the entirety of his career. Drawing upon over 40 years of eminent experience in geology and hydrology, he previously worked for myriad local and national engineering and environmental consulting firms, such as Engineering Tectonics, P.A., Bain, Palmer & Associates, Black & Veatch Engineers, Moore-Gardner & Associates and the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1978. A lifelong resident of High Point, North Carolina, Mr. Nelson notably evaluated surface and groundwater resources for municipal water supplies, such as the development of groundwater systems in North Carolina, and modeled local river basins to evaluate the potential for flood inundation, among other feats. In the 1980s, the practice of environmental regulations was unfolding, which allowed Mr. Nelson to apply his knowledge of geology and hydrology in numerous capacities. Throughout his career, he worked on RCRA hazardous waste management disposal sites and has performed Phase II ESAs, and impressively developed an industrial storm water monitoring program and secured permits for sites in Piedmont, North Carolina. Mr. Nelson is a licensed geologist in the State of North Carolina, a certified professional geologist in the State of Virginia and a registered professional geologist in the State of South Carolina. Drawing upon a BS in geology from North Carolina State University in 1978, he has maintained affiliation with the Geological Society of America, the Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists, the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Society of Civil Engineers, with whom he is an affiliate member. Civically engaged aswell, Mr. Nelson servedon theGuilfordCountyAdvisory Board for Environmental Quality as chairman, and he has taught soil and watermanagement courses at DurhamTechnical Community College.
