After earning his doctorate, Dr. Sawardeker joined the United States Department of Agriculture in Peoria, Illinois, as a chemist for two years before joining Ortho Pharmaceuticals as a scientist in 1967. Remaining with the pharmaceutical company for three years as a senior scientist and group leader, he then spent seven years as a group manager of quality for Johnson & Johnson between 1970 and 1977. For the following four years, he then served as director of quality for American Home Products prior to joining Glaxo, Inc., in 1981. Dr. Sawardeker served Glaxo, Inc., for 13 years prior to his retirement in 1994. Employed first as vice president of quality and member of their operating committee for seven years, he was subsequently promoted to vice president of technology affairs in Latin America and the Far East for Glaxo Holdings from 1988 to 1991. For the final three years of his career, he excelled as corporate vice president and director of Group Quality Worldwide of Glaxo Holdings in London. Dr. Sawardeker was listed among Notable Americans of the Bicentennial Era in 1976 and was honored with the “Order of Long Leaf Pine” Award from former Governor James Hunt of North Carolina in 1983. Alongside his primary responsibilities, Dr. Sawardeker has authored papers for the Journal of Analytical Chemistry and was a key member of the Jaycees for several years. Although his career has been filled with achievements, he is especially proud of his promotion to corporate vice president of Glaxo Holdings in 1991, which allowed him the opportunity to build excellence in terms of product design, manufacturing and regulatory compliance. He attributes his success to attention to detail. Dr. Jawahar Sazro Sawardeker knew from a young age that he wanted to delve into the pharmaceutical industry. Leveraging the encouragement of his parents, who impressed upon their children the value and power of education, he attended Wilson College in his native India and obtained a BS in 1957.
