Maintaining affiliation with the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and Richmond County Bar Association, Mr. Cohen sat on the board of directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association from 1995 to 2001. He previously served as board member, treasurer, secretary, vice president and president of the Staten Island Trial Lawyers Association. Additionally, he has been a member of the board of directors and vice president of United Activities Unlimited, founding and current member of the board of trustees of the Have-A-Heart Foundation, past president and current member of the board of directors of his local Rotary Club, and past and current District Counsel to Rotary International District 7230. As a testament to his success, Mr. Cohen was listed in Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in the East. James R. Cohen started his career with the intention of becoming an actor. While studying history and drama at Ithaca College, he was inspired by his father, a prominent lawyer in Staten Island. His father persuaded him to become a trial lawyer so he could utilize his knowledge and skills in the courtroom. Earning a BA from Ithaca College in 1972, Mr. Cohen received a JD from Syracuse University College of Law in 1976, where he received the Trial Practice Award. He was admitted to the NewYork State Bar and, thereafter, was admitted to practice before the U. S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Impressively, he commenced his collegiate studies at 16 years old and received his admission to law school at 19 years old. Upon receiving his law degree, Mr. Cohen began as an associate with Davis, Decker & Davis in New York, holding that position until 1978. Thereafter, he was hired by the Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Judicial Department as Assistant Counsel.
