Ms. Dunnam was elected to the Oconee County First Steps Board in 1999, where she served as first board chair, and later became the first executive director in 2001, remaining in the role for 16 years. In 2019, she was appointed to serve a three-year term on the Anderson-OconeePickens mental health board. She earned a Resolution by the South Carolina State Senate and a Board of Governors’ Service Award from the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations and Executives in 2017, having also received a 1987 President’s Award from the South Carolina Social Welfare Forum, 1997 Spirit of the Midlands Award from the United Way, and 2001 Community Leader Volunteer of the Year Award from Oconee Volunteer and Information Services. Since 2018, Marie McClure Dunnam has excelled as chief executive officer of Dunnam & Associates. Since its inception, Dunnam & Associates has provided individual and family services, focusing its attention on home visit studies through the South Carolina courts, and working with adult children seeking placement options for their elderly parents. Ms. Dunnam pursued a formal education at Louisiana State University, receiving a BA in journalism in 1967. She went on to earn an MSW from the University of South Carolina in 1979 and has been recognized as a licensed master social worker and later as a licensed independent social worker in clinical practice. Early on, Ms. Dunnam worked as a case manager, case manager II and adult services supervisor for the Spartanburg County Department of Social Services from 1967 to 1978. After an internship in the Ombudsman’s Office, she joined the South Carolina Department of Social Services in 1979 until her retirement in 1999.
