334 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Since 2007, John Edward Lazar has excelled as the senior vice president of the Southern Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society. Alongside this post, he also served as the senior state vice president of the DC\DE/MD/DELMARVA region of the American Cancer Society, the director of development at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and was elected the Washington, D.C., Ward II committeeman to the D.C. Democratic state committee. Earlier, he served in a number of executive-level positions with the American Cancer Society and with prominent government officials. At the inception of his career in 1973 after receiving a master’s degree from Brooklyn College, Mr. Lazar served as an English teacher with the New York City Board of Education for six years prior to receiving an MDiv from the Seminary of Immaculate Conception in 1980. From there, he became a clergyman with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn until 1993. Congruent to these efforts, Mr. Lazar founded and served as president of POMOC, Inc., a nonprofit to help Polish immigrants in Brooklyn and Queens, from 1981 to 1984 and was the director of housing for Argus Community, Inc., from 1993 to 1996. He was ordained to the Roman Catholic Church in 1980 and also holds teaching licenses in the State of New York and New York City. In 2021, Mr. Lazar was elected Regional Alternate Director of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. He has also served as the co-chairman of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club since 2005, having lent his expertise to several other LGBTQ+ initiatives and organizations across the nation. He further authored “Outpouring the Spirit: Gay and Lesbian Spirituality in the Judeo-Christian Tradition” in 1996 and has made multiple media appearances to attest to his expertise in theology, government affairs and LGBTQ+ rights. Mr. Lazar was named Citizen of the Year by Polish American World and an honorary alumnus by Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in 1982. In 1995, he earned a Commendation Award from the New York City Comptroller, and in 1998, he was honored with the President’s Award from the Stonewall Democratic Club.
