120 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Licia Mailani Sakamoto grew up on her family’s farm in Kula, Hawaii, as a fourth generation farmer. Always possessing a desire to teach and teaching in public schools for 12 years, she coupled her passion with her farming expertise and established Ke Kula ‘O Ho’omakuapono in 2019, an experience-based early childhood through eighth grade learning institution on the island of Maui. Operating on the six acres of land that was previously Ms. Sakamoto’s family farm, Ke Kula ‘O Ho’omakuapono is a private school that offers unique curriculum, such as linguistics and crosscultural perspectives on academic issues. Alongside its academic side, the school also offers hands-on education about agriculture. Ms. Sakamoto currently served as its owner, president and chief executive officer. Prior to establishing the institution, Ms. Sakamoto received a BA in child development and teaching credential at San Jose State University in 1995, and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Looking forward, she intends to continue witnessing the expansion of Ke Kula ‘O Ho’omakuapono while also drawing upon her own expertise in teaching to serve as a role model to her students. OWNER, PRESIDENT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Ke Kula ‘O Ho’omakuapono Kula, HI Christine Urbank-Salcito loved mathematics from a young age and, upon being brought under the tutelage of her high school algebra teacher, she decided to make teaching her career. Highly educated, she holds a BA in education and mathematics and an MA in educational administration. She commenced her career as a teacher in Woodbridge Public Schools and then transferred to Rahway Public Schools as an administrator, where she remained until her retirement in 2016. While serving the public schools, she excelled as a mathematics supervisor, mathematics and science supervisor, school principal, director of curriculum and instruction, assistant superintendent and interim superintendent, and was named “Teacher of the Year” by the Woodbridge School District. During her tenure at Rahway as a mathematics/science supervisor, she was a consultant for Merck Institute for Science Education, where she designed science workshops for K-8 teachers. For three years, she was a consultant with Stronge and Associates. Ms. Urbank-Salcito attributes her success to her parents, who were both dedicated and hard-working professionals, and to her teachers.
