74 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION From 1992 to retirement in 2012, Ms. Wilder had two main experiences in Santa Barbara, working with gangs, domestic violence, and the courts representing the Santa Barbara County Department of Alcohol, Drugs and Mental Health Services and a nonprofit agency called CALM (Child Abuse Listening and Mediation). Having experienced childhood physical and emotional abuse, Ms. Wilder used psychology to heal, and later pledged to spend her life helping others with similar problems. Her motto is “One person can make a difference,” and her mantra is “Help the underdog.” In 2020, Ms. Wilder published her first book, titled “The Longer I Live, the Wilder It Gets: A Memoir of Adventure,” available on Amazon. It is the first of three books forming a trilogy, the other two on relationships and psychology. Norma Royale Wilder was interested in learning languages when she was 13 years old, especially Spanish. She studied this language all through high school and college. In 1970, she finished her first master’s degree in Spanish and South American literature at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. For 25 years, she notably taught English and Spanish as Foreign Languages in seven countries prior to entering the field of psychology. In 1992, she earned a master’s degree in depth psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. Ms. Wilder’s community development expertise began at age 20 when she joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Guatemala on a community development project, coordinatedwithCARE, an already established agency in Guatemala. Later, she did a large voluntary project in Costa Rica for El Salvadoran and Nicaraguan refugees fleeing two wars in Central America. She regards her community development service as the focal point of her lifework, which includes both teaching and psychotherapy.
