85 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION After receiving a BS in civil engineering at Washington University at St. Louis in 1966, Dr. Peter G. Flachsbart was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Transportation Corps of the U.S. Army Reserves. While he did not have to report to active duty for a number of years, he attended Northwestern University and earned an MS in 1968 and a PhD in 1971. He focused his efforts on urban and regional planning, an emerging field in the late 1960s, and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain in 1974. Upon graduating with his doctorate, Dr. Flachsbart served as a senior research associate at the University of Southern California for one year before becoming a lecturer at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 1972. Remaining with the university until 1976, he served as an assistant professor, then transitioned to Stanford University, where he taught for four years. Dr. Flachsbart joined the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1980 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1983. He remains in this position today. Dr. Flachsbart has served as a consultant for Routledge Press, the Honolulu City Council, the East-West Center, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, among other organizations. He has published 24 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 13 book chapters and seven peerreviewed professional reports and has assisted over 100 individuals in preparing for the written examination of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was President of the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association of Hawaii from 2000 to 2001. Dr. Flachsbart received the Best Reviewer Award from the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association in 2014, previously earning the Chapter President’s Council Leadership Award and three Travel Awards from the American Planning Association. He was honored with numerous Travel Awards from the American Lung Association of Hawaii, Environmental Protection Agency and National Endowment for the Arts. PETER G.
